Where to Get Car GPS Installation Done the Right Way

By admin April 24, 2026

Let me set the scene. I’m already twenty minutes late to a family function, my phone’s navigation keeps rerouting me through a lane that doesn’t exist, and the cheap mount I bought off a roadside stall just gave up and dropped my phone into the footwell. Again.

That night I made a decision. No more juggling. No more squinting at a phone screen balanced against the steering wheel. I was getting a proper GPS installed in my car — the right way.

What I didn’t expect was how much I didn’t know about the whole thing.

It’s Not Just About the Device

When most people look up car GPS installation , they’re thinking about which screen to buy. I did the same thing. Spent two hours reading comparison articles, watching YouTube reviews, debating between brands.

What I completely ignored was the installation itself.

Turns out, that’s actually where things go right or wrong. A GPS unit slapped onto your windshield with a suction cup will slide, rattle, and eventually fall — usually at the worst possible moment. A properly installed unit, with wiring tucked clean through the dashboard and power drawn directly from the car’s electrical system, is a completely different experience. You forget it’s even there. Which is exactly the point.

One dodgy wiring job can also mess with your car’s electricals in ways that don’t show up immediately. Three weeks later you’re at a service centre wondering why your battery keeps draining. I’ve heard this story more than once.

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before I Walked In

Not every auto accessories shop that advertises GPS installation actually does it well. Some of them just clip a mount onto your dashboard and call it a day. So before you book anyone, ask a few straight questions.

Do they run the wiring internally or just mount it externally? Internal wiring means cleaner work and someone who knows what they’re doing. Which brands do they regularly install? If they can’t name a few — Garmin, Thinkware, Mio — and give you a reason for their preference, that’s worth noting. How long does the job take? Anything under an hour for a full hardwired install is rushed. A proper job takes one to three hours depending on your car.

And ask if they stand behind their work after you leave. That one question alone separates the serious shops from the rest.

Hardwired or Portable — Make This Call First

There are two ways to go about this and both are valid depending on your situation.

Portable GPS units sit in a mount and plug into your cigarette lighter socket. They’re affordable, easy to move between cars, and simple to set up. If you drive multiple vehicles or just want something low-commitment, this works fine.

Hardwired units connect directly to your car’s power, look far cleaner, and don’t advertise themselves to anyone peering into your parked car. If this is your daily car and you plan to keep it, hardwired is almost always the smarter long-term choice.
